History of Antioch Baptist Christian Church
Rev. Dr. M. Waddell, Senior Pastor
… And it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called “Christians.” (Acts 11:26)
From its earliest existence, Antioch Baptist Christian Church recognized Rev. Dr. Maxine Waddell and Rev. A. D. Waddell as the founding Pastors. Antioch celebrated its inaugural worship service on the first Sunday in February 2004. At that time, both Rev. Dr. Maxine Waddell and Rev. A. D. Waddell were chosen by God to become the Chief Servant Leaders of ABCC. Along with twelve others, the opening worship convened and met in the home of the Pastors, the physical location of the church for nearly two years.
ABCC conducted worship, Bible study, prayer meetings, strategic planning sessions, special occasions and business meetings from the Pastors’ home in Decatur, Georgia, from its formation in 2004 to April 2006. With the gift of hindsight, it now appears that God had already determined to use these first two years as a time to anchor the founding members of ABCC in the faith and to create a demonstration of unity in the community of members. Several persons united with ABCC during this period; but with each addition, the Pastors’ home enlarged to accommodate all who came.
Then on Sunday, April 30, 2006, the worshiping community of ABCC joyfully marched into its new physical location. The new worship space was equipped to accommodate more – more outreach, more love, more missions and more people. From two Shepherds, the clergy ranks have increased to include five additional Servant Leader Associate Ministers. From the initial twelve, the membership has grown exponentially. From a few lay ministries, ABCC can now identify diverse lay ministries in which the full community of ABCC can serve according to their gifts, callings and capacities.
Once upon a time, God brought together a diverse community of people and commissioned them to come together to worship God, lift up Jesus and to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. From the very beginning to the present moment, ABCC has been on this journey of faith.
What started as a small band of believers in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior on February 1, 2004, has since become a diversely larger faith community who is still built on the solid rock of Jesus Christ.
Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers… (Acts 13: 1 (a)
